In early 2004 The Húsavík Academic Center and North East Iceland Nature Center started a systematical work on building a marine mammal expertise in Húsavík. Continued by the establishment of The University of Iceland's Húsavík Research Center in 2007.
The Center in Húsavík was the University's first Research centre in North East Iceland. To begin with, it held one position of a director. In fall 2012 there are one and a half positions in addition to the director, who also teaches mammal course at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík.
