The University of Iceland's Research Centre in Hornafjörður was established on the 30th of November 2001. The Research Centre's first director was Rannveig Ólafsdóttir who was succeeded in 2006 by Þorvarður Árnason.
Among the Research Centre's main goals is increasing knowledge about nature, culture and the community in rural areas. Special emphasis has been placed on research in tourism and sustainability.
The Research Centre in situated in Nýheimar at Höfn in Hornafjörður where many different institutions are placed and work together to increase livelihoods and cultural life in the area.
